Overview

Awning windows are hinged along the top edge and open outward from the bottom, working much like a small awning over the opening. This lets you keep the window open for airflow even during light rain, without water getting inside — ideal for Melbourne's changeable weather.

Because they close by pressing firmly against the frame on all sides, awning windows form a tighter seal than many sliding styles when shut. Paired with double glazing, this helps improve insulation, cut draughts, and reduce outside noise.

Their crank-operated opening makes them easy to use in hard-to-reach spots, and they can be left ajar for ventilation without leaving a large gap accessible from outside — a popular choice above kitchen sinks, benches, and bathrooms.
